FAQ

What is Los Altos Hacks?

Los Altos Hacks is a high school hackathon—a 24-hour programming event where students work in teams to make hardware and software projects. This year, we aim to have around 350 attendees with a 1:1 gender ratio but due to the online format we will accept unlimited attendees.

Who can participate?

Any high school student can participate! If you have graduated from high school, you can apply to be a mentor. If you are in middle school, you may be able to participate; please contact us at [email protected] for more information.

How do I form or join a team?

There will be a session at the beginning of the hackathon for you to meet others and form teams. We encourage you to come and meet new people! Each team may have a maximum of four people.

Does this cost money?

No! Los Altos Hacks is free for all participants—shipping, swag, and other costs are covered.

What if I can't code?

No problem! Experience isn't required to attend. In addition, we will have workshops where you can learn!

What should I have with me at home?

As an online event, all you need is a laptop and internet connection to participate!

How can I have fun at an online event?

We'll have fun games and activities on both Discord and the live streaming platform Hopin as well as opportunities to participate in workshops and and listen to interesting panels , all online!

What are the prizes?

You can learn more about competition rules, judging criteria and prizes on our Devpost . We have prizes for a wide range of topics and diverse levels of programming experience!

How is Los Altos Hacks responding to the recent COVID-19 pandemic?

We have decided to move this year's event to an online platform to enforce social distancing protocol.

Is there a Code of Conduct?

Yes, there is! All attendees are required to review and abide by the MLH Code of Conduct during the event.

What about swag and prizes?

We'll ship swag to the first 350 people who submit projects as well as ship prizes to you for free!
